Surviving Autumn/Winter: A Skincare Edit

It’s that time of the year again, and in my case, my -second- Autumn/Winter season in NYC. The season, in all its glory, is dry, and although humidity and my hair don’t do well together, my skin definitely notices the change as soon as we step into the seasons. Last A/W was a learning curve when it came to my skin and what products to use. My rosacea didn’t love the dry and cold wintery breeze, and flared all over my face (and neck).

It was bad, not going to lie. But everything I learned from last season I am applying it this time around.

First things first, a humidifier

I cannot recommend getting a humidifier enough. Not only for the Autumn/Winter time (speeeeciaallly for Autumn/Winter), but for all year around. It keeps my skin bouncy, hydrated, with a youthful looking plump. Aside from skin benefits, it also helps with seasonal allergies and congestion. This is the one thing that changed my skincare game drastically. I keep mine on my bedside table and use it every night.

Switch up moisturizers

Different from the lighter, gel moisturizers during the warmer months, I opt for balmy, thick consistency moisturizing creams that will hydrate my skin but also serve as a barrier from the weather. Because I have sensitive skin, I go for unscented creams. I don’t layer up a lot of products these days, I keep it pretty simple so my moisturizer is a main character in my routine.

SPF, SPF, SPF

It’s a constant even if the days are shorter or not sunny enough. Aside from protecting from UV rays, I find that wearing sunscreen also works as a barrier on my skin for environmental pollution and dryness. I find that mineral sunscreen formulas react better on my sensitive skin.

DON’T FORGET YOUR LIPS

I think I started collecting lip products without noticing. Anything that will keep my lips from cracking or looking dry will be added to my drawer. I am normally really really bad at drinking water, and it gets worse when it’s cold outside. Keeping a lip mask or balm with me at all times, in my purse, on my desk, on my bedside table, prevents my lips from drying up. I know the answer would be to stay hydrated, but if you are like me and just forgets, lip balms will help out for sure.

which brings me to, [drum roll] drinking water

Even if it’s cold outside, if you don’t feel thirsty at all, if you think you had enough water. Drink-water. Not a shocker. Staying hydrated has tons and tons of health benefits that we are all aware of. If you are anything like me, who never ever drinks water, try getting a water bottle you can take with you. Whenever I am working on a screen for long periods of time, I unconsciously grab it and drink water while working. It takes the pressure off staying on top of my water intake, and works in my favor. Another trick is to add flavor packets, or setting reminders on your phone.

I listed some of my favorites below for you to check out!
